“Things I like about my job” is a blessedly long list. Pretty predictable altogether, but now I have a weird one that I was only able to isolate today: the way people carry their computers.
A lot of jobs would have you hooked on email. I certainly didn’t like to be away from it at my last job either. You don’t want to miss anything, it’s only more to read later, etc. etc.
This is not that.
This is people walking from meeting to meeting carrying computers like pre-scarlet fever Velveteen rabbits. Open, shut, by the corners, half open with a mouse and headphones in a screen/keyboard pita. It sounds abusive but instead it’s a security blanket.
The expression frequently accompanying the computer-as-lovey shuffle is just as odd and equally endearing. It’s the decidedly underslept look of a person still frequently amused while being intensely focused 12-14 hours a day.
Says the girl who got home two hours ago and has chosen to stare at a screen for 16 hours today, rather than the totally attainable 12-14.
Right, then.
